Although movies such as “Fifty Shades of Grey” may be have given the public an inaccurate view of BDSM, it has certainly sparked an increased interest into the practice.

BDSM includes a variety of different activities, depending on who you ask. Bondage is only one of them.

When it comes to bondage for beginners, learning about the basic knots is key to keeping your partner safe while being tied up. Here are a few essential bondage knots you need to know. You can buy Japanese silk rope to make these knots, although there are also other rope materials you can try out.

Overhand knot

In bondage situations, this simple knot is often done at the end of the rope. The purpose is to prevent the rope from fraying and slipping. However, it should not be used to support the weight of a person. These are the steps to doing an overhand knot:

  1. Take one end of the rope.
  2. Make a loop. Take the end and insert it through the loop.
  3. Pull the end until the loop closes.

Double overhand knot

There are two ways to create the double overhand knot. One is by creating the basic overhand knot. However, when you run the rope through the loop, you do it twice instead of just once. The second way to create a double overhand knot is as follows:

  1. Create a bight. In knot making, you can make a bight by folding the rope.
  2. Make a loop with the bight.
  3. Run the bight through the loop you made.
  4. Pull the bight until the knot tightens.

Lark’s head knot

The lark’s head is a simple type of a collapsing knot. It is commonly used as part of a tie such as the Single Column Tie. To create a lark’s head knot, follow these steps:

  1. Fold your rope in half to create a bight.
  2. Next, fold this bight down onto itself.
  3. Slide a finger through the loops created. You can pull the ends of the rope until the loop closes. This knot is known as the lark’s head.

There are plenty of basic knots that you should learn and master before you can try tying your partner up during a bondage session. These are only a few.
